To help you get a feel for how easy the Black Box Toolkit software is to use we have recorded several walkthroughs that demonstrate its use. There are also short demos that outline how the hardware is set-up and used with the various software modules of the kit.

These demos assume you have the Macromedia Flash plug-in installed on your computer

Click to start: The Black Box Toolkit menu

Menu
The Black Box Toolkit menu provides you with easy access to each of the software modules used for checking timing and for data analysis.

Click to start: Digital Stimulus Capture And Response

Digital Stimulus Capture And Response (DSCAR)
DSCAR can be used to virtualize a sub-millisecond accurate human where you control which stimuli to respond to and with what timing characteristics. It can be though of as a four channel digital oscilloscope and four channel signal generator. The Data Analyser is used to graphically verify timings. This gives you a sub-millisecond benchmark of actual presentation and response timings.

Click to start: The Black Box Toolkit Data Analyser

Data Analyser (DA)
All software modules record Real Time Log (RTL) files as they capture presentations and simulate responses. These are later analysed by the Data Analyser. The DA provides you wish an easy to use 8 channel scope display with moveable cursors and an in-depth analysis sheet. You can label lines and make notes for later reference. Plus copy plots and data to the clipboard as well as being able to expert plots and data as BMP and MS Excel format files.

Click to start: Digital Stimulus Capture

Digital Stimulus Capture (DSC)
DSC can be thought of as a four or eight channel digital oscilloscope. It is typically used to monitor stimulus presentations made by the remote experiment in four channel mode. In eight channel mode it can also monitor the four buttons of the BBTK response pad. This means you can be sure of both presentation and response timings. The Data Analyser is used to graphically verify timings.

Click to start: Event Generation

Event Generation (EG)
EG can be though of as a four channel pulse generator but with very advanced features. It can be used to generate a sequence of pulses on any of the four output lines. For example, Active Switch Closure lines can be used to trigger a response device in a key tapping experiment or the +5V TTL lines can be used to generate a regular calibration pulse.

Click to start: Calibration

Calibration
The calibration utility enables you to check whether the PC you intend to host the Black Box Toolkit on can achieve a high enough sampling rate. This utility also provides a graphical overview of the number of clock ticks used to take each sample.

Click to start: Response Pad Tester

BBTK Response Pad Test
The response pad tester enables you to check that the stimulus activity can be detected on the four kit input lines in addition to the four buttons of the response pad itself. Stimulus presentations on the remote system running the experiment will illuminate the various LEDs when there is any activity. LEDs for each button will be illuminated when a button is held down.

Click to start: Input and Output Line Checker

Line Check
The line checker enables you to check the input and output lines of the kit. For example the input checker enables you to position opto-detectors correctly on the screen of second computer system. The output line check lets you click on LEDs that let you toggle the state of any output lines. This is useful for checking the powered-out lines which operate tone generators etc.
